Your personal style is a form of a self-expression; a unique way to communicate who you are to onlookers. But it can also inspire your personal brand. Customers like to relate to the people behind a brand, which is why building your personal image outside of your business can shape your brand.
Prior to kickstarting this business, I shared content to Instagram and my blog, under my own name, for years. It was primarily just a hobby – I enjoyed expressing my style through the clothes I wore, the occasionally lengthy captions that communicated my thoughts, the cohesive Instagram grid that showcased my love for shades of brown and elegant visuals. I did so on an almost daily basis because I just enjoyed doing so. That content was what led people to ask if I could carry out photography, copywriting and social media services for clients. People recognised my personal style and wanted it to embody their brands.
I soon learnt the importance of up keeping my own personal image outside of my business’ page. I shared personal writings on a blog, continued to photograph the things I was drawn to, and let my personal story unfold through the content I shared. It allowed clients to understand my inspiration, and to put a face behind the brand.
And so, whether you are an artist, entrepreneur, or content creator, here are a few things I would recommend for you to keep in mind in order to develop a strong personal style that will help you stand out and build a loyal following —
Define your aesthetic
Keep an eye out for the things that attract you. Save them on a Pinterest board, your own moodboard, or use platforms like MyMind to collect all the things that you’re drawn to and have them saved in one space. Watch the visuals unfold and give you a clearer idea of what your style is.
Choose a colour palette
Choosing a consistent colour palette can help you create a cohesive and visually appealing personal brand. Consider the colours you find yourself drawn to, the colours that appeal to you most and are recurring in your moodboards, and the colours that best flatter your appearance. These are the colours you will want to display on your digital presence, across your visual work and wardrobe choices.
Invest in high-quality, timeless pieces
Your choice of clothing, in most cases, will form a pivotal part of your personal brand’s style. While it’s important to keep up with current trends, it’s also crucial to have a strong foundation of high-quality, timeless pieces in your wardrobe. These pieces will form the backbone of your personal style and can be mixed and matched with trendier items to create a variety of looks.
Find a platform that suits you best
Where will you express your style? Which platform facilitates your preferred form of content? Where is your ideal audience based? We love Instagram, where so many photography and design enthusiasts browse, but we also believe in the power of having your own website set up!
Be consistent
In your clothing choices, in your visuals, in your tone of voice, and in your posting rhythm. Allow others to recognise your creations in a second, because you’re known for a particular, unwavering style. With that said, experimentation is healthy and will also help you refine your aesthetic while keeping it fresh and interesting.
Be authentic and true to yourself
Above all, it’s important to be authentic and true to yourself when branding your personal style. Don’t try to be someone you’re not or blatantly copy the style of others. Instead, embrace your unique qualities and let your personal style reflect that.
By following these tips, you can confidently and effectively brand your personal style and build your image. If you’re looking for some assistance with defining your brand identity and visual style, get in touch!
