MARIECLAIRE

When MarieClaire, the incredibly talented visionary and one’s of Malta’s most renowned influencers, approached me for a bespoke illustration to wear to fashion week – I was so ecstatic. I have long looked up to MarieClaire for her style and drive, having collaborated with her on many photoshoots over the years – but this was a whole new concept for us.

Seeing as MarieClaire was nominated for the Best Content Creator award this year, her outfits had to go all out with creativity.

She had a clear idea – a satin cape sewn onto a structured white blazer, and an illustration on top. The sketch idea was mine to propose. So off to the drawing board I went…

I pitched 3 concepts to her, each honouring her minimalistic style but with a certain playfulness that tied in my illustration style and the overall identity we’ve built here at Grace&Rose. MarieClaire fell in love with all three, but we chose to work with florals this time, deciding that this concept would contrast the structure of her blazer most elegantly.

I first experimented with patterns and block florals, before settling on a subtle and somewhat abstract floral sketch incorporating a touch of Grace&Rose’s classic red.

I then created a quick sketch to send to our printers, in Slovakia, before MarieClaire’s mother (a fantastic seamstress who has successfully ran her own accessory brand from Malta) sewed the cape to the blazer.

The outcome was one we both fell in love with – and photographed, together, in the scorching Maltese heat outside of the Mosta Dome before the fashion shows kicked off.
